    《过错》中象征意象的概念整合分析
     
    《过错》是美国经典女作家凯特·肖邦(1850-1904)的第一部长篇小说,讲述了美国重建时期路易斯安那州种植园里的人们所经历的社会变革。肖邦的生平经历在这部小说中有所体现,她之后的作品也都受这部作品的影响。当前国内外已出版诸多关于《过错》的研究成果,但是从认知角度对作品意义的构建过程进行解读的研究却并不多见。
    Fauconnier和Turner提出的概念整合理论作为认知语言学的重要理论之一,为研究意义构建的动态过程提供了理论依据。概念整合理论通过构建概念整合网络从而把意义构建的动态过程完整地展示出来。根据故事情节的发展顺序,本研究选取五个具有典型特征的意象(森林、房间、火车、玛丽的小屋和月亮)作为研究对象,借助概念整合理论及其运作方式,分析了五个意象在特定语境下意义的构建过程及特殊的象征含义,旨在探究肖邦对待社会变革的态度及其对社会现实问题的思考。
    五个意象的意义构建过程通过建立不同的概念整合网络得以实现,研究发现:(1)通过定义“种植园的保卫者”和“原材料的提供者”两种角色和这两种角色所蕴含的冲突框架构建一个“简单网络”呈现森林意象意义的生成过程,从而得出森林意象象征了北方工业文明和南方农业文明在种植园的冲突。(2)房间意象作为源域和它代表的意义作为目标域,据此构建“单辖域网络”来呈现房间意象意义的生成过程,可以得出房间象征了工业化的发展虽然改变了种植园的环境,但是还没有改变当地人们的思想观念。(3)当地居民在不同时期对待火车的态度有所不同,根据“人们对待火车的态度”这个组织框架构建一个“镜像网络”呈现火车意象意义的构建过程,得出火车意象象征了当地人们对社会变革的接受。(4)根据玛丽的小屋这个源域和“社会旧秩序”这个目标域构建一个“单辖域网络”呈现小屋意象意义的生成过程,得出虽然工业化发展是大势所趋,但是发展所带来的问题也不容忽视。(5)根据月亮意象的特征和女主人公在婚前所承担的“男性角色”角色构建一个“双辖域网络”呈现月亮意象意义的生成过程,得出月亮意象代表了南北不同观念在种植园的融合,象征了新秩序的在种植园的建立。
    通过对五个意象意义构建过程的分析,展现了种植园Place-Du-Bois从工业化开始入侵到新秩序建立的具体过程,从而探究出肖邦对待社会变革理性的态度,表达了她对重建后的美国南方和谐与美好未来的憧憬。
    本研究运用概念整合分析了《过错》中五个意象在特定语境下意义的构建过程和它们的象征含义,展示了肖邦对社会发展问题超越时代的观点,为今后对肖邦及肖邦作品的研究提供了一定的借鉴意义。
    ABSTRACT
    At Fault is the first novel of the renowned writer Kate Chopin. It talks about the social change of a Louisiana plantation in the Post Reconstruction South. Not only Chopin’s personal experiences are reflected in this novel, but also her later works are also influenced by this novel. Up to now, many studies on At Fault have been published at home and abroad. However, few scholars focus on the meaning construction of this novel from the cognitive perspective.
    The conceptual integration theory proposed by Fauconnier and Turner holds a significant position in cognitive linguistics and provides the theoretical foundation for exploring dynamic meaning construction. By setting up conceptual integration network, the dynamic constructive process of meaning is able to be presented. According to the development of the plot, this thesis chooses five images that have typical features as research objects to analyze their meaning constructions and connotations in certain context with the help of conceptual integration theory and its mode of operation. It tries to explore Chopin’s attitude towards social change and her consideration on social issues.
    The meaning constructions of these five images are achieved by setting up different conceptual integration networks. This thesis has five findings. Firstly, by defining two roles protector and provider and presenting the clash frame between these two roles, a simplex network can be set up to show the dynamic constructive process of meaning. It symbolizes the intrusion of modern industry to the plantation. Secondly, the room image is served as the source domain while its meanings are served as the target domain. Based on the source-target metaphor, two single-scope networks can be built to show that the development of the industrialization has not changed local inhabitants’ value. Thirdly, local inhabitants have different attitude towards train in different time. Based on the organizing frame that people’s attitude towards train, a mirror network can be set up to symbolize that local inhabitants have already been accustomed by the social change. Moreover, based on the source domain Mare’s cabin and the target domain Old Order, a singe-scope network can be set up to show that these social problems caused by development shouldn’t be ignored. At last, according to the features of moon image and the male role that the heroine once plays, a double-scope network can be constructed to show the reconciliation of two different values and symbolizes the establishment of the New Order.
    Though the analysis, it show the detailed process of the social change from the intrusion of modern industry to the establishment of the New Order. In this way, it is clear to reveal Chopin’s rational attitude towards social change and her best wished to the New South.
    This thesis applies conceptual integration theory to analyze the meaning constructions and connotations of five images in certain context and explores Chopin’s time-transcending attitude towards social issues. All of these provide a reference for further studies on Kate Chopin and her works.
